SETTING SUCCESS CRITERIA AT DARDANUP PRIMARY SCHOOL

Criteria for assessment should be detailed, transparent and justifiable. Students at Dardanup Primary School are developing the team building skill of setting co-construction criteria in a variety of learning areas.  This process empowers students to guide their own learning and internalize the criteria for judging success.

Co-construction Criteria

  • Brainstorm

  • Sort and Organise

  • Make a post a chart

  • Add, Revise and Refine

When students and teachers work together to co-construct criteria a clear learning target is identified.  It increases the students’ understanding of what they will be learning and what will be assessed.  It is a student centred process that encourages students to construct their own understanding of what counts in quality assessments.

Mel Clark, Principal of Dardanup Primary School along with teaching staff has been instructing the Year 5/6 class in setting criteria.  The students recently set their own criteria for an Oral Reporting Project.
